The ‘Musée de la Résistance’ in St Marcel is well worth a visit and very interesting. A farm just outside St Marcel, La Nouette, is where the local resistance movement was based. Approximately 3kms from Malestroit.
Rochefort en Terre is a really pretty old village with many beautiful buildings and interesting and varied craft shops. Approximately 15kms south of Malestroit.
Ploërmel is a much bigger town than Malestroit and is situated above the ‘Lac au Duc’ where there are great facilities for most types of water activities. Approximately 20kms north of Malestroit. Market day is Friday.
Josselin has a magnificent château which is inhabited by the Rohan family. The château is open to the public and houses a wonderful doll museum. Josselin also has some beautiful old buildings and there is a lovely walk along the river. Approximately 25kms northwest of Malestroit. Market day is Saturday.
Vannes is our nearest major city and is the administrative heart of the area. It boasts lots of wonderful architecture, good shops and a vast array of restaurants, many of which are situated in the lovely port area which is home to millions of pounds worth of beautiful yachts and boats. Approximately 35 kms southwest of Malestroit. Market days are Wednesday and Saturday.
La Gacilly is the home of the Yves Rocher empire - in fact he was Maire of the town for a number of years. There is a wide variety of artisans working and selling here. There are also magnificent flower displays, especially down by the main road bridge over the river Aff. Approximately 25kms southeast of Malestroit.
Quiberon & the Côte Sauvage are well worth a visit. Quiberon is a very chic town situated on the very tip of the Quiberon peninsular. Quiberon has lovely beaches and even a ‘Scottish looking’ château. The Côte Sauvage is quite simply breathtaking. Quiberon is approximately 80kms southwest of Malestroit.
Auray is another very pretty market town with an excellent ‘artists’ quarter and a lovely walk down to and along the riverside. Approximately 60kms southwest of Malestroit, west of Vannes. Market day is Saturday.
Locmariaquer is a pretty unspoilt fishing village. This is a good place to board a boat and sail around the Golfe du Morbihan. Most boat trips from most places can be pre-booked at the Office de Tourisme in Malestroit. Approximately 70kms southwest of Malestroit.
La Trinité sur Mer is a must if you like yachts. Here you will find a beautiful marina with trillions of pounds worth of beautiful yachts. There are some good shops and excellent restaurants, many serving freshly-caught local fish dishes. Approximately 70kms southwest of Malestroit on the coast.
Guérande is a fantastic example of a walled city and is rare in that it has a virtually complete wall. Within the walls are some lovely traditional shops. Approximately 60kms south of Malestroit.
Lizio is a very pretty village set around a beautiful old church. Lizio boasts an Ecomuseum, an Insectarium, a moving sculpture museum and a ciderie. One weekend each summer there is a fabulous craft fair with over 250 exhibitors. Approximately 20kms west of Malestroit.
La Vraie Croix is another pretty village which has won many awards for its floral displays. Everyone in the village seems to take part and it is well worth a visit to see and appreciate their efforts. Approximately 25kms south of Malestroit between Questembert and Elven.
The brewery at Le Roc St André produces local Breton beer. It is possible to have a tour of the brewery and sample their products on site. Le Roc St Andre is approximately 12kms northwest of Malestroit.
